What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is the Canadian federal government's online immigration management system for skilled workers. It does not process applications directly. Instead, it manages a pool of candidates who have been assessed and ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). IRCC conducts regular draws from this pool, inviting the highest-scoring candidates to apply for permanent residence.
The system was introduced in 2015 and has become Canada's primary pathway for skilled worker immigration. It is fast, transparent, and designed to select candidates most likely to succeed economically in Canada.
Always verify current draw scores and requirements at canada.ca. CRS cutoffs change with every draw. This guide explains the system, not the current scores.
Three programs under Express Entry
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
For skilled workers with foreign work experience. Requires at least one year of continuous full-time skilled work experience and a minimum score of 67 on FSW selection factors.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
For temporary foreign workers and international graduates with at least one year of skilled Canadian work experience in the past three years.
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
For skilled tradespeople with a valid job offer or certificate of qualification in a skilled trade in Canada.
Category-based draws
Since 2023, IRCC also conducts draws targeting specific occupations (healthcare, STEM, trades, transport, agriculture) and French language proficiency.
How the CRS score is calculated
The Comprehensive Ranking System assigns points across four core areas for candidates without a spouse, and five areas for candidates with a spouse or common-law partner.
| Factor | Maximum points (no spouse) |
|---|---|
| Age | 110 |
| Education | 150 |
| Language (first official language) | 136 |
| Language (second official language) | 24 |
| Canadian work experience | 80 |
| Skill transferability factors | 100 |
| Provincial nomination | 600 |
| Canadian job offer (NOC 00) | 200 |
| Canadian job offer (other eligible) | 50 |
| Canadian sibling | 15 |
| French language ability | 50 |
How to improve your CRS score
The most effective strategies to increase your CRS score, in order of impact:
- Get a provincial nomination. Worth 600 points, this is the single largest boost available and virtually guarantees an ITA.
- Improve language scores. Every band improvement in IELTS or CELPIP can add significant points. Retaking tests is worth the investment.
- Gain Canadian work experience. If you are already in Canada on a work permit, CEC eligibility significantly boosts your profile.
- Improve French language skills. Category-based French draws often have lower cutoffs and bonus points are available.
- Complete Canadian education. A Canadian degree or diploma adds education points and skill transferability points.
What officers look for in Express Entry applications
Once an ITA is issued and an application submitted, an officer reviews the file. The CRS score got you in the door. What matters now is the quality and consistency of your documentation.
Common issues that delay or refuse Express Entry applications include: work experience letters that do not match the NOC description, language test scores that are close to the minimum threshold, foreign credential evaluations that are incomplete or from unrecognized bodies, and gaps in employment history that are unexplained.
A well-prepared Express Entry application anticipates these issues and addresses them proactively in supporting documentation.
